Oscars Retrospective: Cavalcade (6th Academy Awards Review)

Image
Rule Britannia ~ British National Anthem Cavalcade is a movie that I really don’t want to review. This is one of the most bore-to-tears-inducing pictures I have ever seen in my entire life. And, because it won Outstanding Production, that means I must now wrack my brain to remember what the Hell it was about. Upon watching it, my initial reaction was just a general, “Well, that was pretty dull,” but as I thought about it more and more, the more and more it falls apart. Now, having fully looked at this and compiled my thoughts, this is a really awful movie, even for 1930s’ standards. In fact, this is still early in this series to call this and I may eat my words down the road but, at least for the Golden Age of Hollywood, this may very well be the absolute worst movie to have ever won the Oscar for Best Picture. There’s not really anything in it that’s offensive like in The Broadway Melody (1929) or Cimarron (1931) but there also isn’t anything somewhat great in it like tho...

Top 10 Best Black Mirror Episodes

Image
Heaven is a Place on Earth~Belinda Carlisle Some call Black Mirror the modern-day Twilight Zone (before they actually made a modern-day Twilight Zone ). Others say that it wishes it was that good as The Twilight Zone was never so hit-and-miss (to which I counter, have you ever actually marathoned The Twilight Zone ?). Still others state that that is irrelevant as while Black Mirror may be hit-and-miss, when it hits, it knocks it out of the park. So much so that you can actually have some pretty in-depth and interesting discussions with fans on the show about which are the best episodes and which ones just didn’t make it. So, hey, with season 6 being announced (a week ago, I know, these things take time to write, shut up), let’s count down the top 10 best episodes of Black Mirror … in my opinion, of course. 10. Black Museum Black Museum almost feels like a weird meta-episode. In a show that is already an anthology series, Black Museum is an anthology episode. The episode is set in...

Success or Snub? Grand Hotel (5th Academy Awards Review Pt. 2)

To see part 1, click here . Overture~Bernhard Kaun - Frankenstein Once again, we shall ascertain if Grand Hotel was truly the best movie of the arbitrary 12-month time frame of the year that it came out (August of 1931 to July of 1932). Thankfully, this is one of the last of those. Grand Hotel is on record as being the only movie that won the big prize and was nominated for absolutely nothing else. Not Best Actor or Actress, not Best Score, not Best Director, nothing. You’d think having a director who could work with so many divas and construct such a cool set and still churn out a project would make Edmund Goulding an easy shoe-in but apparently not. (The Best Director prize went to Frank Borzage for Bad Girl , a very style-less and dull movie that didn’t deserve it.) In addition, this was the first Oscar ceremony to start handing out awards for short films. The first animated short win was Walt Disney’s Flowers and Trees , which is the first usage of a three-strip Technicolor p...
